Auditors Tasked on Impact-Driven Environmental Audits

Mr. Ayine who made the call at the opening of the 10th AFROSAI WGEA meeting on 7th October, 2020 via zoom, also seized the opportunity to thank members for unanimously conferring on SAI Nigeria, the privilege to lead the group.

“Perhaps topmost among the many lessons that the Covid-19 epidemic teaches is the fact that we need to do more to protect our environment. For far too long, economic progress has come at the expense of the environment, but we see that when there is a pollution of the environment, especially of the air which is the largest driver of climate change, the spread can be rapid, fatal and potentially devastating to the economy,” he said.

The Chairman added that while we may not be able to prevent certain bad things from happening, auditors can use their work to reduce the impact of climate change on life and productivity.

Presentations were made by Afrosai-e and the INTOSAI WGEA, and further deliberations centered around drawing up a new workplan for the group with the following recommendations: More cooperative or joint audits are encouraged, SAIs should send to the secretariat published reports and other materials that can enrich the groups’ website.

Others include: SAIs should contribute articles and reports for the Bi-annual AFROSAI WGEA Newsletter, the secretariat is to engage SAI Cameroon to determine the membership composition of the AFROSAI WGEA Steering Committee, AFROSAI WGEA members are encouraged to plan towards attending the 20th INTOSAI WGEA Assembly meeting from 19th–21st January, 2021.

The meeting held from 6th-8th October, 2020.
